PREVIEW | The magic of the cup reaches round 2

The second round of the Copa del Rey, to be played between Tuesday 5 and Thursday 7 of December, is getting back underway. There will be 27 matches to decide which teams join Villarreal CF and the four teams playing in the Spanish Super Cup in the last 32.

It is the time of year when everyone is hoping and dreaming once again and as an appetizer before Christmas, the Copa del Rey arrives with the best offerings for a festive week of football: goals, emotion, passion and spectacle.

14 clubs from the First Division, 17 from the Second Division, 9 from the First Federation, 11 from the Second Federation and 3 from the Third Federation make up the 27 match ups for a round taking place between the 5-7th of December 2023.


Villarreal CF have already become the first team to reach the third round after beating Zamora CF in extra time (1-2) on 22 November.


Two clashes between teams from the Third Federation and the First Division will get the second round’s play underway on Tuesday. In what is without doubt the most spectacular tournament in Spanish football with play at The Camp Municipa El Regit (Atzeneta UE-Getafe CF) and the Estadio A Lomba (Arosa SC-Valencia CF). In addition, Tuesday's fixtures include two other games: RCD Espanyol de Barcelona-Real Valladolid and CD Castellón-Real Oviedo.

Wednesday sees the bulk of the round’s action with 16 matches. Highlights include Real Sociedad's visit to CE Andratx (Sa Plana; 16.00, Movistar), CF Villanovense's visit to Real Betis Balompié (Romero Cuerda; 19.00, Movistar) and Sevilla FC's visit to Atlético Astorga (La Eragudina; 21.00, Teledeporte).

Thursday sees the end of the second qualifying round with the last seven matches.

The 28 survivors from the second round will join the four teams participating in the Spanish Super Cup: Real Madrid, Fútbol Club Barcelona, Club Atlético de Madrid and Club Atlético Osasuna, who are exempted from playing this second round.

The Copa del Rey will bring a feast of football to a festive week in our country.
