“How do the other figures in the world of football see the referee? Coaches, footballers? How do referees see themselves?” These were among the starting questions to kick off the first Refereeing Congress of Aragón organised by the Royal Aragonese Football Federation, which over two days brings together nearly two hundred referees from all levels of football in the city of Zaragoza.

The opening event, held at the Hotel Reina Petronila in the Aragonese capital, was attended by the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Rafael Louzán, who shared his initial thoughts alongside the president of the RFAF, Manuel Torralba, and the Zaragoza City Council’s Sports Delegate, Félix Brocate.

In his opening remarks, the RFEF president expressed his support for the refereeing community: “The RFEF is proud of the thousands of male and female referees we have across Spain. You are an example to others, beyond refereeing itself. You are part of a big family. We must work to keep improving. There can be no verbal or physical abuse in football. Together, we will work to eradicate it. You will prevail. I am proud to be among you.”

The City Council’s Sports Delegate, Félix Brocate, who is also an international handball referee, echoed the same message: “It is an honour for me to be here because I will always be a referee. Being a referee helps you navigate life, no matter what you do. I’ve never met a referee who is a bad person; you are good people, because you deliver justice with rigour and discipline, with commitment. That helps you in life, so don’t waste it.”

On behalf of Aragonese football, president Manuel Torralba thanked the organising committee for its initiative, before recognising its work and predicting the success of the event.

The two-day Congress schedule includes talks by figures such as the national women’s team coach, Montse Tomé, accompanied by her assistant Nacho Fernández; the president of the Technical Committee of Referees, Luis Medina Cantalejo; and swimmer Teresa Perales.
