Son Moix kicks off the semi-finals with a first time cup clash between two previous champions

The coliseum of the Balearic Islands hosts the first leg between Mallorca and Real Sociedad this Tuesday.

Two previous champions go into their first ever cup clash for a place in the final that pits two teams against each other for the first time in the 120-year history of the Copa del Rey.

For the first time, RCD Mallorca and Real Sociedad meet in the cup, in a semi-final that brings together the two best defences of this season’s tournament.

In the five previous ties that both sides have had to overcome, the Balearic side have only conceded two goals, while just one has been scored against the Basques, who are yet to play at home in the cup this season.

So, this Tuesday at 21:00 (Spanish peninsular time, live on La1 and Movistar) the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey kick off at Son Moix with the only two-legged stage of the competition, with At. Madrid and Athletic Club taking the field in the Spanish capital on Wednesday.

Javier Aguirre's side are pinning much of their hopes on their home form, where they knocked out Girona in the previous round, and have only had two defeats all season.

On the other hand, Imanol Alguacil has various challenges on the horizon ahead of him, including the Champions League, their fight for Champions League places in the Primera Division and, now, the exciting possibility of reaching another final in the Copa del Rey, three years after lifting the trophy at La Cartuja in Seville.

The historical head-to-head matchups favour the team from Mallorca 3-2, and they are dreaming of returning to a cup final more than twenty years after winning the title at the Martínez Valero stadium.

Antonio Raíllo and Pablo Maffeo will miss the game through suspension and injury for the home side, while the visitors will be without Carlos Fernández Luna, Odriozola, Tierney, Aihen Muñoz and Dutchman Becker due to injury.

Alejandro Muñiz Ruiz will be in charge of the match, with Pablo González Fuertes as VAR assistant in a duel full of promise. The second leg will take place on Tuesday 27 February at Anoeta.
