The Spanish National Team nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards
The Real Casa de Correos, headquarters of the Government of the Community of Madrid, hosted the announcement of the nominees for the Laureus 2025 Awards on the first Monday of March. The members of the Foundation have announced who deserves to be in the hunt for this prestigious award for their performances in the year 2024.
The Spanish national team is among the candidates for the best team of the year award after having won the 2024 European Championships, a title it won after beating England 2-1 in the final in Berlin. A trophy that was Spain's fourth European Championships in their history and which puts them in contention to be one of the teams deserving of the Laureus Award. This award, considered to be the Oscars of sport, was won by the Spanish team in 2011, thanks to having won the 2010 World Cup, and the Spanish Women's National Team won it last year, after winning the 2023 World Cup in Australia.
In addition to Luis de la Fuente's team, two other Spanish teams are also in the running for the award. Real Madrid, for winning the Champions League, the Primera Division title, the European Super Cup, the Spanish Super Cup and the Club World Cup, and Fútbol Club Barcelona, in the women's category, for winning the Champions League, La Liga, the Copa de la Reina and the Spanish Super Cup.
The winners will also be announced at the Madrid Community Building on 21 April.
