Comunicado de Prensa del Presidente de la Real Federación Española de Fútbol, Ángel María Villar

El pasado viernes 2 de septiembre la UEFA comunicó a todas sus asociaciones miembro que los tres candidatos a su Presidencia habíamos superado satisfactoriamente el examen de idoneidad llevado a cabo por la Comisión de Control de la FIFA como requisito previo a la celebración de las elecciones a este cargo. Este hecho constituye una gran noticia para la UEFA. En lo que a mí personalmente respecta, confirma de modo irrefutable mi aptitud ética e integridad para continuar desarrollando mis funciones como miembro del Consejo de la FIFA y Comité Ejecutivo de la UEFA, a pesar de algunas opiniones públicas que en los últimos meses así lo habían cuestionado.
 
Desde octubre de 2015, en atención a lo sucedido y por responsabilidad personal asumí las funciones propias del Presidente de la UEFA. Ha constituido una verdadera satisfacción realizar esta tarea aún en tiempos difíciles, representando y trabajando por la UEFA en multitud de eventos durante todo este lapso, poniendo el bien de la organización antes de cualquier interés personal electoral. Me gustaría destacar por su importancia: el Congreso Extraordinario de la UEFA de 25 de febrero en Zúrich, el Congreso Ordinario de la UEFA de 3 de mayo en Budapest, la dirección de las diferentes reuniones de su Comité Ejecutivo, las finales de la Champions League y Europa League en Milán y Basilea, la EURO 2016 en Francia, y la reunión el pasado mes de agosto en Mónaco con los representantes de los clubes para redefinir el nuevo formato de la Champions League. Aprovecho para dar las gracias a las asociaciones nacionales, miembros del Comité Ejecutivo y Administración de la UEFA por haberme prestado su inestimable ayuda y confianza todo este período.
 
El pasado 19 de julio presenté mi candidatura a la Presidencia de la UEFA con un ambicioso programa centrado en posicionar al fútbol como principal protagonista de nuestra organización. Si bien desde entonces han sido numerosos los apoyos que he recibido para continuar adelante con mi campaña, después de una profunda reflexión, he decidido retirar mi candidatura. Son abundantes las voces de los representantes del fútbol español que me han hecho sentir y me han solicitado que continúe trabajando por el fútbol de mi país presentando en los próximos meses nuevamente mi candidatura a Presidente de la RFEF, a la cual he dedicado la mayor parte de mi vida como directivo.
Creo firmemente que la UEFA, como organismo que une todo el fútbol europeo, se encuentra en posición de alcanzar grandes metas en el futuro.
 
Quiero finalizar deseando suerte a los dos candidatos y dando las gracias a todos aquellos que me han apoyado durante todo este tiempo, reafirmando mi compromiso de seguir trabajando por el fútbol europeo y mundial desde el desempeño de mis funciones como Vicepresidente del Consejo de la FIFA y Comité Ejecutivo de la UEFA.

Last Friday 2 September, UEFA informed all of its member associations that the three candidates to its Presidency had successfully passed the required eligibility checks carried out by the FIFA Review Committee prior to holding the elections for this position. This is great news for UEFA. As far as it personally concerns me, it irrefutably confirms my ethical aptitude and integrity to continue carrying out my functions as a member of the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, despite some public opinions that had put it into question over the last few months.

From October 2015, in view of the events that took place, and as a matter of personal responsibility, I took over the functions of the UEFA President. It is with great satisfaction that I have carried out this task, even in difficult times, representing and working for UEFA in a large number of events during this period, placing the good of the organization before any personal electoral interest. Due to their importance, I would like to highlight the following: the UEFA Extraordinary Congress in Zurich on 25 February, the UEFA Ordinary Congress in Budapest last 3 May, the different meetings of its Executive Committee which I have chaired, the finals of the Champions League and Europa League in Milan and Basel, EURO 2016 in France, and last August’s meeting in Monaco to redefine the new format of the Champions League. I take the opportunity to thank the national associations, members of the Executive Committee and the UEFA Administration for providing me with their invaluable assistance and trust throughout this period.

Last 19 July, I submitted my candidature for the UEFA Presidency with an ambitious programme focused on making football the main focus of our organization. While I have received a great amount of support since then to continue my campaign, after a profound reflection I have decided to withdraw my bid. There have been many representatives of Spanish football who have made their voices heard and asked me to continue working for my country’s football by submitting a new bid in the next months for my reelection as President of RFEF, to whom I have dedicated most of my life as an official. 

I believe that UEFA, as the organization that unites all European Football, is in a position to reach great goals in the future.

I want to finish by wishing the two candidates the best of luck and thanking all of those who have supported me during all of this time, and reassert my commitment to continue working for European and worldwide football from my positions as a Vicepresident of the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee.
