La RFEF lamenta el fallecimiento de Ignacio Zoco [Eng. incl]
El Presidente de la Real Federación Española de Fútbol y su Junta Directiva desean transmitir a la familia y seres queridos de Ignacio Zoco su más sentido pésame por el fallecimiento de quien fuera héroe de la Selección española de fútbol en el Campeonato de Europa de 1964, donde España conquistó su primer título de la Eurocopa, tras vencer en Madrid a la antigua URSS.
Ignacio Zoco Esparza nació en Garde, Navarra, el día 31 de julio del año 1939. Inició su carrera como centrocampista en el CA Osasuna de Pamplona en 1959, con tan solo 19 años de edad, equipo en el que estuvo 3 temporadas.
Llegó al Real Madrid CF en 1962 y a la Selección, un año antes, jugando con el combinado nacional en 25 ocasiones entre 1961 y 1969. Su momento cumbre fue la disputa de la Eurocopa del año 1964, donde España se proclamó campeona de Europa ante la selección de la URSS. "Éramos un grupo con carácter, todos dirigidos por un jugador excepcional, Luis Suárez; Olivella y Zoco ponían el temperamento", rememora Amancio al recordar la conquista de aquel primer título en la historia de la Selección.
En realidad, Zoco, un clásico "6", fue en aquel primer equipo campeón uno de los pilares que explica la posterior conquista de la Euro del 64. Olivella, recordando a Zoco, señala que "para entonces teníamos una base de equipo muy definida. Desde que se inició el torneo hasta el final intervinimos 41 jugadores, pero tanto el día de Hungría como el de la URSS jugamos los mismos. Entre Ignacio Zoco y yo, los defensas de centro, había una compenetración perfecta; no me equivocaba ni viéndole saltar: en cuanto se elevaba sabía si iba o no a llegar a la pelota".
También jugó un Mundial, el de 1966 en Inglaterra. El de Garde actuó en tres encuentros: dos derrotas por 2-1 ante Alemania y Argentina, y una victoria por 2-1 contra Suiza.
Tras 12 años en el club madrileño donde conquistó 7 Ligas españolas, 1 Copa de Europa y 1 Eurocopa, en el año 1974, se retiró. Casado con la cantante María Ostiz fue Delegado de Deportes del Gobierno de Navarra y, posteriormente, miembro de la junta directiva del Real Madrid CF. También era presidente de honor de los veteranos del club madridista y directivo honorífico de AEdFI.
El féretro estará a partir de las 16.00 horas en la sala 15 del Tanatorio de Tres Cantos y el martes 29 será trasladado a Pamplona para la celebración del funeral.

He will be forever remembered after winning Spain's first title, conquering the European Cup after beating USSR in the Madrid final.
Ignacio Zoco Esparza born in Garde, Navarra, on July 31st 1939. He started his career as midfielder for CA Osasuna in Pamplona in 1959, aged only 19 he took part in three seasons.
He got to Real Madrid CF in 1962 and the National Team, a year before, playing for the Spanish side on 25 occasions between 1961 and 1969. He reached his summit at the '64 EURO, where Spain become continental champion beating USSR at the final in the Santiago Bernabéu. "We were a group with character, all managed by an exceptional player: Luis Suárez, Olivella and Zoco set the pace," recalls Amancio when speaking of the Spanish National Team's first title.
The truth is that Zoco, a classic "6" was the first team champion, one of the pillars who took part in the '64 EURO. Olivella, when remembering Zoco, points out that "at that time we have a very defined base of the team. Since the tournament started until the end 41 players took part, therefore the day Hungary, as well as the USSR, the same squad took part in the match. Between Ignacio Zoco and I, the central defenders, there was a perfect mix, I didn't make mistakes, whenever he got up I knew whether he would make it to the ball or not."
He also played a World Cup, in England 1966. There he played three matches: two defeats 2-1 against Germany and Argentina, and one 2-1 victory over Switzerland.
After 12 years with the Madrid-based club, where he won 7 Spanish Leagues, 1 European League Cup and one EURO, in 1974 he retried from the playing field. Married to singer María Ostiz, he was Sports Councillor for Navarra and later board member of Real Madrid CF.
