Esther González's Return with a Goal
A year ago, Esther González played her last match for the National Team against Belgium. On that 5th of April, she scored two goals, and yesterday, in her return, she netted the goal that sealed the victory against Portugal. It was an intelligent and lively striker’s goal inside the box, even though Inês Pereira initially saved her shot: "Since I came on, I thought I had to get an opportunity. The ball didn’t come to me very well, it was quite high, so I couldn’t strike it properly, but as soon as the goalkeeper rebounded it, I thought this one is going in, no one is going to anticipate it. I was quite clever there, I handle myself well inside the box."
And indeed, she does it well. The forward from Huéscar took advantage of a cross from Athenea del Castillo and, on the rebound, scored the fourth goal of the night at the Capital Do Móvel. It was an unforgettable night for Esther, who expressed her joy at the end of the 90 minutes: "I’m happy to be back, to play with the National Team again, to wear this shirt and defend this badge. I’m very happy. Coming back to the National Team, scoring... it’s a privilege to play with the players in this team, it’s easy, and I’m happy for the whole team."
The Granada-born player, who came on as a substitute for Mariona in the second half, needed only 19 minutes to score her 30th goal for the National Team in 46 matches. It’s no wonder that the World Champion was so emotional and clear about who this victory, her return, and her goal with Spain were for: "For my partner, for my family, who are always there, day in and day out. Also, for the team I’m with, they take great care of me, make me feel important and happy, and the work at Gotham has helped me reach this level of fitness, enabling me to contribute to the National Team."
