Clone of An MVP Performance Dedicated to Heaven
Álex Baena scored his first FIFA World Cup goal and was named Player of the Match after inspiring Spain's victory over Uruguay
Álex Baena is unlikely to forget this night. The Atlético de Madrid midfielder, who retained his place in the starting XI against Uruguay, scored his first-ever FIFA World Cup goal and was named FIFA Player of the Match. His contribution proved decisive, as his strike secured Spain's 1-0 victory and ensured the national team completed the group stage as group winners, unbeaten and without conceding a goal.
After 66 impressive minutes, Baena made way for Yeremy Pino, having established himself as one of Spain's standout performers. In addition to scoring the winner, the left-sided midfielder consistently created problems for Uruguay's defence and played a key role in helping Spain control a fiercely contested encounter.
Following his goal, Baena looked to the sky in an especially emotional celebration. The tribute came on what would have been María Caamaño's 14th birthday, adding profound meaning to a memorable individual performance.
"I knew it was her birthday, and destiny had something special in store for her."
Some connections transcend football, and the bond between Álex Baena and María Caamaño was one of them. Their story began unexpectedly during a Copa del Rey match between CD Guijuelo and Villarreal CF, a meeting that unknowingly marked the beginning of a friendship that would leave a lasting impact on both.
From that day forward, the Spain international remained in close contact with María and her family, supporting her throughout her courageous battle with Ewing sarcoma. On 16 April 2026, María sadly passed away at the age of just 13 following a deterioration in her condition. Her memory, however, continues to inspire everyone fortunate enough to have known her.
Baena's goal, his gesture towards the sky and the FIFA Player of the Match award represented far more than a footballing achievement—they were a heartfelt tribute to a friend whose presence continues to accompany him.
A photograph of María Caamaño travels with Baena before every match, serving as a constant source of inspiration for the Spain international.
Already a UEFA European champion and Olympic gold medallist, Baena continues to establish himself as a key figure for the national team and now dreams of adding a FIFA World Cup title to an already remarkable international career.
