Half a dozen ties open an exciting second round on Tuesday in the Copa del Rey Mapfre, which will deliver many memorable moments this December.
The final month of the year brings a widespread rise in cup temperatures. From Tuesday 2 to Thursday 4, the second round offers 28 spectacular single-leg fixtures, the winners of which will enjoy the privilege of attending the draw on the 9th at the Ciudad del Fútbol — by then the four participants in the Supercopa will already be confirmed and will join the draw for the round of 32, to be played in the week prior to Christmas Eve.
Zaragoza, Soria, Ferrol and Portugalete are the four venues that on Tuesday mark the start of this thrilling journey, with a trio of Primera División clubs — Deportivo Alavés, CA Osasuna and RCD Mallorca — set to face stern tests against opponents from three or four divisions below.
The meeting between Racing Club Ferrol (Primera Federación Versus e-Learning) and SD Huesca (Liga Hypermotion) will constitute the closest cross-division tie in this opening round, alongside Guadalajara vs Ceuta, while the Madrid derby between CDA Navalcarnero and Getafe CF will close the first block of fixtures of the week in the Copa del Rey Mapfre.
Wednesday night will serve up the main course: twelve appetising ties, including a pair between Segunda División sides (Mirandés vs Sporting and Cultural Leonesa vs Andorra), a clash between historic Spanish clubs now in different divisions (Real Murcia vs Cádiz), and attractive visits from two of the former cup winners still in the competition (Reus vs Real Sociedad and Torrent vs Real Betis), among other electrifying contests.
A further ten all-or-nothing matches remain for Thursday, with the tribute to the late José Antonio Reyes in Almendralejo standing out as the most poignant moment of this second round. CD Extremadura, the last club of the Utreran international’s playing career, and Sevilla FC, the club of his life, will lead the homage at a packed Francisco de la Hera stadium.
