The first hurdles on Spain’s path to reclaiming the UEFA Women’s Nations League title have now been confirmed. The national team will face Norway, Ireland and Switzerland in the group stage of the 2027 edition, as they look to repeat their successes in 2024 and 2025.

Spain will approach the new tournament with both the responsibility and excitement of defending their status as reigning champions. The national team not only lifted the trophy in 2025, but also won the inaugural edition of the competition in 2024. This back-to-back triumph has established Spain as one of the leading forces in European football and strengthened their credentials as contenders to remain at the top of the UEFA Women’s Nations League.

Spain went into Tuesday’s group-stage draw in Nyon, Switzerland, as top seeds. They were among the leading teams in League A Pot 1, alongside Germany, Denmark and France, having finished top of their group in the qualifying campaign for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

This edition will determine the league allocations for qualifying for the 2029 European Championship, as well as the four teams that will qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The third edition of the UEFA Women’s Nations League will begin in February 2027 and feature three leagues. In League A, Europe’s 16 top-ranked national teams have been divided into four groups of four. The winners of each group will qualify for the finals, where the title will be decided through two-legged knockout ties in October (semi-finals) and December (final and third-place play-off).

Spain’s most recent triumph came on 2 December 2025 at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, where Spain beat Germany convincingly 3-0 to lift the trophy for the second consecutive time. It was a historic night, witnessed by 55,843 spectators, setting a new attendance record for a Spain senior women’s international.

Earlier, on 28 February 2024, the national team had claimed their first UEFA Women’s Nations League title with another outstanding performance on home soil. On that occasion, Spain defeated France 2-0 at La Cartuja Stadium in Seville, winning the inaugural edition of the tournament.

The 2025 triumph also held special significance for Sonia Bermúdez. The head coach secured her first title in charge of the national team in the very competition in which she had made her debut as head coach. She now faces the challenge of extending Spain’s winning record and guiding the team to another continental title.

Spain now know the route they must take to further cement their place in the history of a competition with which they have enjoyed a remarkable relationship since its inception. As reigning champions and winners of the first two editions, they will aim to claim another title in 2027 and reaffirm their dominance in the UEFA Women’s Nations League.
