A 2023 to remember
If there was a year that could last forever, the Spanish national team would choose, without any shadow of a doubt, 2023. The national team made history in Sydney after beating England in the World Cup final. A massive achievement and one that matches any other in the history of Spanish sport in terms of stature. Everyone's favourite team beat England (1-0) in Sydney thanks to a goal by Olga Carmona who, after a long and hard fought tournament, lifted the World Cup trophy along with her teammates.
In the final stretch of 2023, with Montse Tomé now at the helm of the national team setup, Spain started their way in a new competition; the UEFA Women's Nations League, a tournament that is also a chance to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris. The Spanish national team qualified brilliantly for the final four of the tournament, which will be played next February and for which Spain already knows its opponent: the Netherlands.
As for the individual awards, Aitana Bonmatí was awarded the Ballon d’Or as the best player of the year, a podium she shared with Salma Paralluelo who took third place. In addition, two more players have joined the 100 caps club, Irene Paredes and Jennifer Hermoso have reached a figure only previously surpassed by Alexia Putellas in the run up to the last European Championships. There are now three centenary players in the national team dressing room.
