Final stop: Basel
After making stops in Bern, Thun and Zurich, Spain’s Swiss adventure in this European Championships reaches its final stop: Basel.
The World Cup and Nations League champions arrive in the Swiss city chasing the dream that began on 3 July: to become champions of Europe. To do so, the players have left what has been their home since arriving in Switzerland on 29 June. At eleven o’clock in the morning, there was an emotional departure from the Royal Savoy in Lausanne, a team hotel that has become like a home, bidding farewell to all those who made their day-to-day life here so pleasurable. They boarded the bus one last time at the entrance of the grand hotel in the Olympic City to head towards Basel.
After covering just over 200 km between Lausanne and Switzerland’s cultural capital, crossing mountains, green and blue landscapes, rivers and lakes adding beauty to the journey, the team reached its final destination at midday. As in every city they have visited, the Spanish national team received the warmth and support of their fans. A crowd awaited the players on arrival, hoping for a photo opportunity or an autograph with their stars and to give them their encouragement. Thanks to the RFEF’s ‘Fan Experience’ activities, dozens of supporters were able to enjoy a special moment upon the arrival of Montse Tomé’s side.
This afternoon, the coach and the captain, Irene Paredes, are set to appear before the media in the pre-match press conference (17:45) and the squad will then conduct their official training session (18:30) to prepare for the massive clash against England at the match venue, St. Jakob-Park.
