Luis de la Fuente: "We're very excited, but we’re keeping our feet on the ground".

The national coach took questions from the media at the press conference following Spain's third win at the European Championships.

"We are very excited, but we’re keeping our feet on the ground", Luis de la Fuente began by stressing once again at the press conference following Spain’s victory against Albania (0-1). The match, thanks to a great goal by Ferran Torres and a great job by the whole team, saw Spain finish the group stage as group B leaders with three wins from three games, having scored five goals and without conceding any.

"We use that excitement as an engine to keep going, but it doesn't guarantee anything. There is a lot of merit in winning all three games," commented the national coach, who is already looking ahead to the Last 16 clash next Sunday at 21:00.

The national team deserve a lot of credit for their good work at the tournament so far, which, beyond the good numbers, has seen a splendid group stage from whatever perspective you look at it: "Finishing the group stage unbeaten is a sign of teamwork. A team is as much about attack as it is about defence.

"We are delighted that the talent of our players and their work is being recognised. The players are doing things very well," acknowledged Luis de la Fuente, who did not shy away from praise, but sent a message of humility and serenity: "Being favourites doesn't guarantee us anything. We have to be cautious”

Finally, the Spanish coach wanted to dedicate a few words to Jesús Navas. The Andalusian player became the oldest Spaniard to play in the finals of a European Championships with his start in the match: "Congratulations, Jesús, and may you continue with this energy for many more years".
