The first step towards our European dream
Dreams are trained for, fought for, visualised… dreams are worked on. The Spanish national team dreams of this European title, of adding the title of European champions to their World Cup and UEFA Women's Nations League titles. To build that dream and make it a reality, tonight, at the Wankdorf Stadion against Portugal, they will have to pave their way to success.
After much effort and hard work, the big day has finally arrived. In this fourteenth edition of the continental competition, the national team lands alongside 15 other teams with the excitement of claiming the title, the only one they are yet to win. Spain have participated in the last four editions, with their best performance coming in 1997 when they reached the semi-finals. Today, against Portugal, a new adventure begins – the first page of a story that could become a part of the national team’s history.
Montse Tomé’s side qualified for the major event in women’s football as winners of Group A2, with 15 points and 18 goals scored, sharing the group with Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Denmark. Tonight, their opponents are Portugal, a side they have recently faced twice in the UEFA Women's Nations League qualifying stage. On both occasions, the Spanish team emerged victorious. First at the Capital Do Móvel, with a 2–4 win, and then in the Balaídos stadium, with a 7–1 result lighting up the scoreboard in Vigo.
In addition to the two defeats against Spain, Portugal conceded six goals to England and three to Belgium in their latest Nations League outings, and their last friendly before the European competition ended in a goalless draw against Nigeria. Spain meanwhile, after qualifying for the UEFA Women's Nations League finals in style, defeated Japan in their final match before tonight’s Euros debut. Both Montse Tomé and Patri Guijarro spoke about the opponent during yesterday’s pre-match press conference, as well as the matches recently played against them: “They’re very quick on the counter-attack,” noted the coach, while Patri recalled “the first of the games against them – that one is more like the real Portugal than the thrashing in Vigo.”
🎙️ "Esperamos un partido igualado, como el primero contra ellas en #UWNL o más. Portugal es un equipo muy agresivo".

The team’s desire to compete and ambition with the ball – two key traits highlighted by both Montse and Patri at the official press conference before yesterday’s final training session:
