The Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid served as the latest stop on the institutional agenda of the President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Friday morning.

Rafael Louzán held an extended working meeting with the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez Almeida, in a climate of mutual proactivity and close collaboration, characteristic of the encounters between both institutions.

The President of the RFEF and the Mayor of the Spanish capital were joined at the meeting by the head of the Madrid Football Federation and Vice President of the RFEF, Paco Díez, as well as the Federation’s Secretary General, Álvaro de Miguel, and the Head of the Delegated Sports Department of the City Council, Sonia Cea.

“In addition to the 2030 World Cup, we aim for Madrid to host the Champions League final in 2027”

At the conclusion of the meeting, Louzán described it as “an initial meeting in which we have addressed many common issues and from which we leave very satisfied. We plan to hold numerous events in the Spanish capital, with the organisation of the 2030 World Cup being particularly significant. However, before that, in 2027, we aim for Madrid to host the Champions League final, and we are finalising this bid with UEFA, alongside many other projects.”

Faced with these challenges, the RFEF President expressed “our immense gratitude for the exceptional collaboration we are receiving from the Madrid City Council, led by its mayor, who is well known for being a very affable person.”

In March, Spain’s capital will host the first meeting of the six countries from three different continents that will stage matches during the 2030 FIFA World Cup. This will mark the starting point for preparations for the final stages in which Madrid will play a prominent role. As such, the RFEF and the Madrid City Council will maintain a joint working team to tackle this and other organisational challenges.
