MATCH PREVIEW | Three Points on the Line as the Road to Brazil 2027 Begins

Spain Begin 2027 Women’s World Cup Qualifying Campaign Against Iceland
Fri, 21/11/2025 - 15:46

Spain have a new objective, a new destination: Brazil.

The national team begin their journey as reigning world champions, following their triumph in Australia and New Zealand in 2023, and they do so in Castellón against Iceland.

Drawn in Group A3, Spain take to the pitch this evening in search of their first three points and a strong opening step towards that new dream. The match, officiated by Emanuela Rusta, kicks off at 7:00pm at the SkyFi Castalia Stadium.

This will be the sixth meeting between the two sides, with the head-to-head record currently standing at three draws, one win and one defeat.

Form Guide

Spain arrive full of confidence after lifting the UEFA Women’s Nations League with a commanding victory over Germany. Iceland, ranked 16th in the FIFA rankings, recently secured their place in League A by overcoming Northern Ireland.

Now led by Þorsteinn Halldórsson, Iceland have never qualified for a Women’s World Cup. Spain, by contrast, are the defending champions and have appeared in three editions of the tournament.

Focused on the Goal

The Nations League winners, European runners-up and current FIFA world number one side — coached by Sonia Bermúdez — understand the importance of every point.

Iceland are a collective opponent. They transition well, they’re very physical. You’ll see a Spain that wants to win,” said Bermúdez ahead of the match.

Mariona Caldentey, who is set to earn her 100th cap this evening against Iceland, echoed that ambition:

They’re an uncomfortable team, but our objective is clear: to be in Brazil.

The first three points — and the first step towards that objective — run through Iceland and Castellón. They run through shining tonight at Castalia.

With their focus firmly set, Spain aim to light up Castellón, combining effort and talent in pursuit of a victory that sets the path towards Brazil alight.
