Canada, top level opponents for Spain in Almendralejo
It's time to reset, learn and keep fighting to improve and grow. That is the philosophy of a national team that, having already qualified for Euro 2025 in Switzerland, is looking for its best version and positive sensations against top level opponents. The World Cup and UEFA Women's Nations League champions return to work after the Olympic Games and do so against Canada, one of the best and most powerful women's teams, along with the USA, from CONCACAF and number six in the FIFA world rankings.
The internationals called up by Montse Tomé are thus beginning to prepare for their participation in next year's European Championships. A stage that they head into ‘excited’ and motivated and whose starting point will be against the Canadians. Montse Tomé and Alba Redondo warned at the pre-match press conference that ‘there are no friendly matches. Friendlies are real matches’ but this Spain has “players to compete against any team”.
Tonight's match will be the fourth meeting between the two teams and Spain will be looking for their third win. Of the previous meetings, two have gone Spain's way and the third ended in a draw.

The first time the senior women's national teams of Canada and Spain met was in March 2017, in the final of the Algarve Cup. The memory for the Spaniards couldn't have been better. It was their first participation in the tournament that brought together the elite of women's football and a goal by Leila Ouahabi in the fourth minute ended up giving them the title of champions in that final against Canada.
Two years later, in May 2019, the Canadians were the penultimate test before leaving for the World Cup in France. The match, played in Logroño, in Las Gaunas, ended goalless.
The last of the precedents dates back to 2022, to matchday 3 of the group stage of the Arnold Clark Cup. The national team topped the group after beating Canada 1-0. The goal to beat the team that had just become champions at the Tokyo Olympics was scored by Alexia Putellas.
The Canadians, ranked sixth in FIFA, were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics on penalties by Germany, the same team to whom the national team lost its last match, the match for third and fourth place in the Olympic competition.
It's a new year, an exciting Euros year and it all starts today in Almendralejo, against Canada.
