HIGHLIGHTS | Progress secured from the spot
Two teams from the Segunda Federación and one from the Primera Federación advance after knocking out three top-flight teams in a round marked by extra time and penalty shootouts.
Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano had to dig deep to secure wins at the Narcís Sala and Reina Sofía stadiums against a resilient Sant Andreu and Unionistas de Salamanca. Meanwhile, Huesca edged past their opponents with a narrow victory at the Nou Estadi de Tarragona, sealing their place to the third round.
Ourense CF triumphed in the Galician derby at O Couto, with Ángel Sánchez scoring in the 87th minute to eliminate RC Deportivo de La Coruña. CD Eldense and Racing Santander clinched victories by a single goal in their respective all-Segunda División clashes. UD Almería, on the other hand, claimed a famous victory at Reino de León with a late goal from Léo Baptistão.
The 21:00 kick-offs delivered more drama, including three matches that were decided by penalty shootouts. Valencia CF defeated Ejea de los Caballeros 1-3, while Pontevedra CF caused the upset of the day by knocking Villarreal CF out of the competition. Penalty shootouts proved decisive at Las Gaunas, Ruta de la Plata, and Francisco Muñoz Pérez, where UD Logroñés, CD Tenerife, and CD Leganés emerged victorious against Girona FC, Zamora CF, and CD Estepona, respectively.
The standout player of the round was Pol Arnau, full-back for UD Logroñés, who had to take over as goalkeeper after his teammate Kike Royo was injured, with all six substitutions already having been made. Pol played the second half of extra time, keeping a clean sheet, and played a pivotal role in the penalty shootout, saving a decisive spot-kick from Girona to send his team through.
