On RFEF.es, A History of the Spanish National Team

Telling a story of a passion is not always easy. That is why everyone ends up telling it in their own way. The Spanish national team, as the shared passion that it is, does not escape this temptation. That is why we present, in several chapters, a History of the Spanish National Team that tries to be, despite the passion, unsentimental and objective.

The RFEF.es website,  the Royal Spanish Football Federation and its national team’s website would like to share with its readers a series of texts recalling the history of the Spanish national team since its origins in 1920.

This section opens with the first great period in the history of the Spanish national team, between 1920 - when it was founded as a football team and took part in the Antwerp Olympic Games - and 1936, the year in which the Spanish Civil War began, a real turning point not only in the political history of the country but also for the future of the national team.

Those 16 years (1920-1936), which marked the beginning of the history of the Spanish national football team, can be divided into four distinct stages:

These stages also had an epilogue: the story of the Spanish national team and its internationals during the civil conflict that split Spain in two.

SECOND PERIOD

After the Civil War, it was time for reconstruction and to try to recover what had been lost during the war, at least in terms of football.
