Spanish football was one of the main highlights of the Laureus World Sports Awards, as the prestigious awards ceremony, honouring athletes from around the world, celebrated its 25th anniversary.
As such, the president of the RFEF, Rafael Louzán, attended the awards ceremony held this Monday in Madrid, representing the extended family that is Spanish football and showing support for the clubs and athletes nominated in this year’s edition.
Among them, Spanish international footballer Lamine Yamal received the award for Breakthrough Sportsperson of the Year thanks to his extraordinary achievements at just 17 years old with his club, FC Barcelona, and as a player for the Spanish national team, with whom he won the European Championships in Germany last summer.
The European Championships-winning national team itself, represented at the gala by head coach Luis de la Fuente, was nominated for the Team of the Year award. The prize ultimately went to another Spanish club, Real Madrid CF, which, alongside FC Barcelona Femení, completed Spain’s presence in this category—shared with major global sporting institutions such as the Boston Celtics and the British Formula 1 team, McLaren.
Spanish international Aitana Bonmatí, who won the Laureus award in 2024, was another nominee for Sportsperson of the Year, while other great Spanish athletes such as tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, MotoGP rider Marc Márquez, and swimmer Teresa Perales also received recognition from the members of the Laureus Academy, composed of world-renowned athletes.
Rafael Louzán also took part in the tribute held during the closing minutes of the ceremony for Rafael Nadal, who was honoured with the Sport Icon award for his exemplary tennis career, which came to an end just a few months ago during the Davis Cup held in Spain.
