The Spanish Women's National Football Team has once again made history, rounding off an already unforgettable 2023 with a great way to sign off the year. The FIFA rankings were updated this Friday and placed our national team in the number 1 position for the first time, overtaking the traditional big names of women's football such as the United States, France, England and Sweden.

Victories at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and a brilliant qualification campaign for the UEFA Women's Nations League final four (where Montse Tomé's side will play at home in the semi-final against the Netherlands on 23 February next year) have given the national team the points needed to climb from second place in the rankings to first.

Dominance of European teams

With 2 066.05 points, Spain is ahead of the United States (2 045.12 points) in second place, with France (2 021.69 points) completing the top three. Fourth place goes to England and fifth to Sweden, in a further demonstration of the strength of the European teams, competition against whom Spain have qualified for the Nations League final four.

The assertion that it was a brilliant qualification campaign is backed up by the stats: five wins, one defeat, 23 goals scored and just nine conceded in six matches. These figures are in addition to those of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where the national team won the trophy after a group stage in which their stumble against Japan, which left them second in the group, did not knock them off course. The following rounds were negotiated comfortably: 5-1 in the Round of 16 against Switzerland, 2-1 against the Netherlands and Sweden in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, and the now legendary 1-0 win over England in the final in Sydney.

With its rise to the top of the FIFA ranking of 192 countries, the Spanish national football team consolidates its dominant position among women's national teams. This reinforces the RFEF's commitment across the age categories reflected in recent significant successes such as an U-20 World Cup, two U-17 World Cups, five U-19 European Championships and four U-17 continental trophies.
