MATCH PREVIEW | One for the history books

Real Madrid and FC Barcelona meet for the eighth time in the final of the Copa del Rey

Sat, 26/04/2025 - 10:37

There are facts that define history. To put into context the magnitude of the importance attributed to our two protagonists throughout the history of the Copa del Rey, we highlight the following stat: between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF the two teams have played in 75 of the 123 finals of the Spanish Cup to date, and this is the eighth final contested between the two giants of the Spanish game.

FC Barcelona, with 31 titles and 11 runners-up medals, are the team that have lifted the trophy the most times; Real Madrid completes the prolific podium behind Athletic Club with a total of 20 trophies and 20 second places.

Since they first met in 1936, with a 2-1 victory for the team from the capital, there have been seven Clásicos in Copa del Rey finals, with four victories for the Whites and three for the Catalans, the most recent final between the two being in 2014, at Mestalla, where Real Madrid won 1-2.

From historical data to the present. Without a doubt, our title contenders in 2025 have earned their place in the grand final of the tournament without any room for argument. Both teams reach the title clash with overwhelming goal-scoring records, totalling 37 goals between the two across the four rounds they have come through, 19 goals for FC Barcelona and 18 for Real Madrid.

On the road to Saturday night's grand final, the team led by Hansi Flick have eliminated UD Barbastro, Real Betis Balompié, Valencia CF, and Atlético de Madrid; while Carlo Ancelotti’s side have overcome Deportiva Minera, RC Celta de Vigo, CD Leganés, and Real Sociedad.

There are facts that determine history, but even these will fade into the background when this Saturday at 22:00 at La Cartuja stadium, which will open its doors to fans three hours earlier, the ball starts rolling to decide which team will be crowned champions of the 123rd final of the Copa del Rey in Seville.
